Q. I haven’t had any tutoring or help in preparing for the exam I’m sitting and it is only a few weeks away. Is it worth buying a pack to prepare?
We believe it’s never too late to prepare for an exam. Having said this, you may find the preparation process challenging with the little time you have left.
We’ve found in the past that the practice questions can help highlight areas of weakness or strength. We recommend that you use them help figure out the areas that you’re still struggling with.
Q. I’ve heard that you cannot prepare for these exams; in fact, it’s not recommended. Is this true?
In our experience helping hundreds of students prepare for competitive exams for over thirteen years, this is completely untrue and will put your child at a considerable disadvantage. Test preparation is vital and should not be left to chance. Test taking is a learned skill and every skill takes practice. A professional athlete will train for months or even years before an event, a musician will practice for hours each night before a big performance, so how can you expect your child to perform well on a test without preparation?
It is not uncommon for competitive exams such as scholarship and select entry exams to contain items that test material well beyond what is expected for your child’s current year level. In fact, most students who enrol in our test preparation classes are already amongst the top of their class in their respective schools. If your child is capable, learning material several years ahead will definitely improve your child’s confidence during the exam and their overall chances of success. High quality test preparation programs will also familiarise students with questions they may have never seen before. In addition to this, if you are thinking about preparing your child for a test, that means that someone else has already started preparing, often several years in advance.
If you have limited time before the exam and choose to do only one thing, we highly recommend that you familiarise your child with the format and types of questions that are likely to come up through exam packs.
